New Journal Session 5

Q Read chapter eleven well. Your task for this session is to discuss digital photography as explained in the text. Read well the “Focus On Digital Photography” section on pages 296-297, and study each of the accompanying photographs within this section. Choose one of the four photographs in this section, then discuss the content along with how the use of color helps to reveal the content (not just the subject) and of the piece. Remember, form reveals content, and the use of color is an element of form in art photography. Since these are examples of digital photography, can you tell what has been digitally changed or enhanced? Be sure to number (1, 2, 3, 4) and answer all of the four discussion questions below: 1. Name the photograph, photographer, and date of your selection. What is the subject matter? 2. Discuss how the use of color helps to reveal the content (see above). How does the color work to inform you about the meaning behind the photograph? 3. After study and close observation, what do you suppose has been digitally changed or enhanced in the photograph you selected? 4. Would the photograph have been possible without the use of digital technology? Why or why not? Remember, your participation and response should clearly reflect your reading and understanding of the chapter and specific content for this session.

The photograph that I have chosen is called Plums by Bill Gekas and it was created in 2012. The subject of the painting is a child sitting by a table on which a bowl of plums can be seen. The main agenda of the artist was to ensure that he is capturing the photographic elements. He tried to present the photo as a painting inspired by the old masters (citation). The photo showcases warm and yellowish tones and the colors capture the still life effects.
